Palm kernel fatty acids (INCI: Palm Kernel Acid) are a blend of fatty acids, rich in lauric acid, obtained from palm kernel oil. When saponified with an alkali they form soap, which is why they appear in soap bases where they give dense lather and cleansing power. It is a functional component, not a care active. Its job is to build the product's cleansing matrix. As a soap base, this type of fatty acid cleanses effectively but with a somewhat degreasing effect that can feel drying on delicate skin. Topically, especially in rinse-off format, systemic absorption is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Irritation potential and allergy risk are low, but its surfactant character is moderate: dry or sensitive skin may feel tight after use, and it is best followed with a good moisturizer.
