Dextrin palmitate (INCI Dextrin Palmitate) is an ingredient derived from starch bound to palmitic acid. In a formula it is an oil-phase thickener: it structures oils and butters, gives a pleasant powdery texture and helps hold pigments in makeup and sunscreens. Its role is purely functional. It is not a care active and brings no biological benefit to skin; it is there to add body, stability and a dry finish to the formula. It does that job well, with no further promises. It is inert on skin and its systemic exposure from topical use is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high: irritation and allergy risk are low, suitable for sensitive skin. It does not dry the skin and is not linked to pore clogging in normal use.
