In a formula it joins water and oil phases and, secondarily, helps curb microbial growth, so it supports the preservative system without being a classic preservative. It is a functional component, not a skincare active. Its role is texture, emulsion stability and partial preservation support. It fits clean-label formulas that want plant-derived emulsifiers, and it does its technical job. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy, fine for sensitive skin. There is no evidence of meaningful comedogenicity at usual use levels.
