About this ingredient
Potassium Sorbate (E202) is the potassium salt of sorbic acid. A broad-spectrum food preservative, active against yeasts and moulds, weaker against bacteria. Where applied. Creams, serums, toners, hydrogels, masks, shampoos, cleansers (0.1-1%). Often paired with sodium benzoate (E211) for broader spectrum. In natural and eco brands – the main alternative to phenoxyethanol and parabens. Mechanism. Active only at pH below 6.0 – blocks microbial metabolic enzymes. Effective in pH 5-5.5 formulas; at pH >6 needs combination with other preservatives. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. FDA, EFSA approve as a food additive. Hypoallergenic. Occasionally causes brief stinging on open erosions (e.g., chapped lips). Suitable for baby and child cosmetics. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable in any product.
