Caprylhydroxamic Acid (CHA) is a synthetic chelator and preservative booster. The molecule binds metal ions (especially iron) that enter products via water and raw materials and feed microbial growth. Mechanism. Chelating ions reduces metal availability to microbes and blocks the enzymes they need. CHA is active across a wide pH range (4-8), which sets it apart from classic chelators like EDTA that work in a narrow pH. Often combined with glyceryl caprylate, phenoxyethanol or pentylene glycol for synergy. Where applied. Creams, emulsions, serums, shampoos, especially in formulas labelled 'paraben-free' and 'without traditional preservatives'. In Spain – in Sesderma, Isdin, Cantabria Labs Heliocare lines and natural brands like Freshly Cosmetics. Evidence base. Manufacturer INOLEX (Spectrastat) published a series of challenge tests: 0.3-0.5% provides ISO 11930-level protection against Staphylococcus, E. coli, Aspergillus brasiliensis. Weaker than parabens on its own, comparable in a system with glyceryl caprylate. Safety. CIR in 2017 confirmed CHA safety in cosmetic use at concentrations up to 1%. Non-irritating, non-sensitizing, non-comedogenic. Systemic absorption through intact skin is minimal. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. No restrictions at standard cosmetic concentrations. Best suited to: any skin type. Especially interesting for sensitive-skin patients who don't tolerate formaldehyde releasers, and for those who avoid parabens.
