Candelilla wax (INCI Candelilla Cera) is a plant wax from the Euphorbia cerifera shrub. In a formula it thickens the oil phase and gives structure, so it holds the shape of lipsticks, solid balms and stick deodorants. It also adds shine and a mild occlusive effect. It is a functional texture-and-structure component, not a skincare active. It treats neither wrinkles nor dark spots: it gives the product firmness and a film that helps hold water. It is a common plant alternative to beeswax, and it does that role well. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy. Comedogenicity is very low (1 of 5), suitable for most skin types, though waxes at high levels can feel occlusive on very oily skin.
