Calcium citrate (INCI: Calcium Citrate) is the calcium salt of citric acid. In cosmetics its job is technical: it helps hold the formula pH in range, binds metal ions that speed up rancidity, and stabilizes emulsions and gels. It also shows up as a buffering agent in effervescent products and masks. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. On its own it does not hydrate, brighten, or firm. Its work ends once the formula is stable and at the right pH, so effectiveness here is judged by the finished product, not by this single ingredient. For topical use the systemic contribution is negligible. It can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is good. The irritation and allergy potential is low, which makes it suitable even for sensitive skin. Calcium citrate is non-comedogenic and does not dry the skin out.
