Oleth-20 is a nonionic emulsifier and solubilizer, listed in INCI under the same name. In a formula it joins the oil phase with the water phase and also dissolves actives or fragrances that otherwise would not mix with water. It shows up in creams, lotions and micellar waters. This is a functional formulation component, not a skincare active. It makes the product stable and uniform, but it does not treat the skin itself. Its role is structural and it handles it well. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good. It is a mild surfactant, with low irritation and allergy potential. At high levels and on very reactive skin it could dry a little, but at usual use levels it rarely causes problems.
