Oleth-3 phosphate (INCI: Oleth-3 Phosphate) is an emulsifier based on a phosphated fatty acid derived from oleyl alcohol. Its job in a formula is to bind the oil and water phases so emulsions stay uniform and stable. It is a functional component, not a care active. Its usefulness lies in giving a cream an even structure and a pleasant feel. It is not in the product to treat skin, but to keep the formula holding together without separating. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, the allergy potential is low and it is classed as a mild surfactant, so it rarely dries at the usual levels. On sensitive skin it behaves well within a balanced formula.
