Chromium Hydroxide Green (CI 77289) is an emerald-green mineral pigment, hydrated chromium oxide Cr2O3·2H2O. Produced by alkali precipitation of chromium salts. Shade is brighter, more translucent, and cooler than CI 77288 (chromium oxide). Where applied. Decorative cosmetics: eyeshadows, eyeliners, mineral makeup accents, professional body-paint colors. Concentration 1-25%. In Spain – in niche and professional decorative cosmetics Mac, Make Up For Ever, Sensilis. Difference from CI 77288. Chromium hydroxide (CI 77289) is brighter, emerald, translucent. The oxide (CI 77288) is matte, olive. Chromium hydroxide contains crystallization water, making the structure less dense and more light-permeable. Mechanism. Pure mineral pigment. Does not react with skin, does not penetrate the epidermis. Colors the surface via light reflection. Stable. Evidence base. A functional pigment. No therapeutic efficacy. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Cr+3 is non-toxic and non-allergenic. In quality pigments Cr+6 content is controlled (<10 ppm in the EU). FDA has banned it in lip and mucosal products since 1976. Chromate and allergy controversy. Same as CI 77288: low-quality refining may leave Cr+6 contamination. Chrome-allergic patients – use with caution. Pregnancy and lactation – safe.
