In a formula it works as a light emollient and solvent: it softens skin, gives a non-greasy slip, helps dissolve and spread oils and actives, and speeds absorption. It is a functional sensory component, not a skincare active. It appears in light emulsions and products with an oil phase. Pregnancy safety. Systemic absorption through intact skin is low and there is no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low, but the oleic part slightly enhances penetration at high levels, so rich oily emollients are introduced more cautiously on acne-prone skin.
