Oakmoss extract (Evernia Prunastri Extract) is a lichen, a classic perfumery material for chypre fragrances. Contains atranorin, evernic acid, chloroatranorin – phenolic compounds with a deep woody-green scent. Where applied. Perfumery (especially men's, chypre and fougère scents), scented cosmetics. Modern formulations use purified extract with reduced atranorin content. Contact allergy. On the EU list of 26 mandatory-labeled fragrance allergens. SCCS 2017 (Opinion 1459/11) capped atranorin and chloroatranorin in the finished product at 0.1% due to high sensitization. ESCD 2018: positive patch-test reactions in 1.5-2% of patients with fragrance allergy. Safety. Since 2023 the EU introduced additional restrictions on "oakmoss" – manufacturers must document extract purity. Avoid in patients with eczema, atopy, and rosacea. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. No direct data, but sensitization risk is increased in sensitive skin. Alternatives: fragrance-free formulas, synthetic woody accents (Iso E Super) without the 26-allergen list.
