Fructan is a plant polysaccharide of fructose chains, related to inulin. INCI: Fructan. In a formula it works as a humectant and conditioning component: it holds water, forms a thin protective film on skin, and is credited with prebiotic support of the skin microbiome. It is a supporting moisturizing component with a sensory effect rather than a potent active. The prebiotic claims are moderately studied. Pregnancy safety. Topical use is systemically negligible, with no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low, suitable for sensitive skin.
