INCI: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract
Source of polyphenols, the main one being EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate). An antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective agent.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Antioxidant and photoprotective activity of EGCG is well documented in vitro and in small clinical studies. EGCG stability in formulas is problematic: it oxidizes in air. No large RCTs for anti-aging effects.
Green tea extract (Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract) is obtained from tea bush leaves. Contains polyphenol catechins: epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG, up to 50%), epicatechin, epigallocatechin. Also caffeine, theanine, flavonoids. Mechanism. Antioxidant: scavenges hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals. Anti-inflammatory – inhibits COX-2, NF-κB. Photoprotective – reduces thymine dimer formation and photopigmentation after UV. Antimicrobial against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. Where applied. Antioxidant serums and creams, acne products, post-procedure formulations, sunscreens (1-5% extract or 0.1-1% EGCG). In Spain in Sesderma, Mesoestetic, Endocare, ISDIN. Evidence base. Yoon 2010 (J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol) RCT in 40 patients over 8 weeks with 2% EGCG: sebum reduction by 32%, acne papules by 58%. Camouse 2009: topical green tea polyphenol extract before and after UV reduces thymine dimer formation by 66%. Cochrane Review 2020 in actinic keratosis – EGCG formulas as imiquimod adjunct. Safety. CIR/SCCS confirm safety. Hypoallergenic. Non-comedogenic. Does not photosensitize. Rare contact reactions possible in very sensitive skin. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically at cosmetic concentrations. Systemically high EGCG doses in supplements may cause hepatotoxicity – but topical systemic absorption is minimal.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Green Tea Extract is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Green Tea Extract suits: oily, normal, combination, sensitive, dry.
