White clay based on hydrated aluminosilicate. Gently adsorbs excess sebum and impurities, so it appears in masks for oily skin.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Adsorbing and mattifying action is confirmed by dermatology clinic practice. Kaolin is milder than bentonite and suitable for regular oily skin care.
Kaolin (China Clay) is a natural white clay based on hydrated aluminum silicate (Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄). Forms from feldspar weathering. Used in cosmetics since antiquity (Ancient Egypt, China), in pharmacy as an absorbent in diarrhea. Where applied. Face masks, cleansers, deodorants, loose powders, mineral sunscreens (5-50%). Gently absorbs excess sebum, debris, and toxins from the skin surface. In Spain in Mercadona Deliplus masks, Sesderma Sebovalis, Avène Cleanance Mask, Babaria BB creams. Evidence base. Direct clinical RCTs on kaolin in cosmetics are few; studies show absorption properties and reduced skin shine in instrumental tests (sebumeter). Marketing often claims "detox" and "toxin removal" – these claims have no clinical support. Safety. CIR rated kaolin safe at cosmetic concentrations (2003, re-evaluated 2018). EU SCCS has set no restrictions. Irritation is rare; in patients with very dry skin kaolin masks may worsen tightness – moisturize afterwards. Pregnancy and lactation – safe topically. Suitable for oily and combination skin. With dry and sensitive – use with caution, do not leave masks on for long.

Kaolin is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
