Levocarnitine (INCI: Levocarnitine), or L-carnitine, is an amino-acid derivative that in the body helps transport fatty acids for energy production. In cosmetics manufacturers add it to oily-skin formulas and link it to possible sebum regulation. Here it pays to be clear about efficacy: the claim that it reduces skin oiliness when applied topically has little independent support. There are a few small studies with modest results, but no solid base. It is better understood as a marketing-driven supporting ingredient than as a proven sebum regulator; do not expect real acne control from it.
