Sarcosine is an amino acid, a natural derivative of glycine. In cosmetics it is used as a skin conditioner and added to products for oily or acne-prone skin, where it is linked with oil control. It also serves as a base for making mild sarcosinate-type surfactants. On efficacy, restraint is in order. It works as a supporting conditioning ingredient; data on real sebum control in human skin are limited, so a strong sebum-regulating effect should not be expected from it alone. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin, including oily skin that is often dehydrated as well. In cosmetic formulas most people do not react to it.
