Manuka oil (INCI: Leptospermum Scoparium Branch/Leaf Oil) is an essential oil distilled from the branches and leaves of the New Zealand shrub. In cosmetics it is used in formulas for breakout-prone skin for its effect on the look of oily skin. As an active, keep expectations measured: it gives a clean feel and an aromatic profile, but the evidence for acne control in a cosmetic product is limited. It works better as routine support than as a treatment for the lesion itself. Topically it is not systemically relevant, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Still, like any essential oil, it is best at low concentration and diluted. Irritation potential is low, but allergy risk is medium: essential oils sensitize a share of people. If your skin reacts to fragrances or essences, patch test on a small area first.
