Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Extract (INCI: Melaleuca Alternifolia Tea Tree Extract) is a plant extract, different from and far less concentrated than tea tree essential oil. In a formula it soothes and refreshes blemish-prone skin and supplies compounds with some action against microorganisms. On efficacy, tea tree essential oil has a basis for mild acne, but the diluted extract here is gentler: it works as soothing support for oily or spot-prone skin, not as a strong anti-acne treatment. For moderate acne, actives with clear backing remain the choice. In pregnancy and breastfeeding the cosmetic extract at low concentration does not carry the concern linked to pure essential oil; still, on very sensitive skin it is wise to introduce it slowly. Skin tolerance is usually good, but allergy risk is medium: tea tree components can sensitize some people. Most do not react, but that is why a patch test is sensible on reactive skin.
