Phellodendron Amurense Bark Extract is an extract from the bark of the Amur cork tree. Its best-known component is berberine, an alkaloid with antioxidant and calming activity. In cosmetics it is used as a supporting ingredient for reactive and blemish-prone skin, in soothing and oil-control formulas. On efficacy it pays to stay sober. Berberine shows interesting effects in the lab, but topical clinical evidence that would justify an acne-treatment role is scarce. It works as a supporting active for comfort, not as a substitute for ingredients with solid backing against blemishes. For topical use in pregnancy and breastfeeding there are no clear risk signals at usual cosmetic concentrations.
