A plant extract with tannins and antioxidants. It soothes and helps protect skin from free radicals. Well tolerated.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
An antioxidant plant extract. Safe.
Terminalia Chebula fruit extract is a plant extract rich in tannins and antioxidants. It gives a soothing effect and helps protect skin against free radicals, so it goes into calming and antioxidant formulas. On efficacy it has more backing than the average botanical extract. Compounds like chebulagic acid and polyphenols show antioxidant activity in lab studies, with early data on skin. It does not replace vitamin C or retinoids, but it is a reasonable support antioxidant within a routine. Applied topically there is no meaningful systemic absorption, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Because of its tannin content, at very high concentrations it could feel slightly astringent, but in usual cosmetic formulas it is comfortably tolerated.
