About this ingredient
Theobroma Cacao Extract is an extract of cocoa beans. Source of polyphenols: epicatechin, catechin, proanthocyanidins. Also contains methylxanthines (theobromine, caffeine) and fatty acids. Mechanism. Cocoa polyphenols show in vitro antioxidant activity: scavenge free radicals, protect cell-membrane lipids from oxidation. Theobromine and caffeine deliver mild vasoconstrictive and anti-oedema effects. Where applied. Anti-aging serums and creams, eye-area products, masks. Final-product concentration 0.5-3%. In Spain – ingredient in Bioderma Pigmentbio, Mesoestetic Hydra Vital. Evidence base. RCTs with oral cocoa polyphenols (Heinrich 2006, Mogollon 2014) showed hydration and elasticity gains over 12 weeks. For topical use the evidence base is more modest – most tests are in vitro or in animals. Safety. CIR confirmed safety at cosmetic concentrations. Allergic reactions are rare. In acne patients at high concentrations comedones are possible (Fulton rating 4 for cocoa butter, but not for the extract). Pregnancy and lactation – safe at cosmetic concentrations.
