About this ingredient

Thyme Extract (INCI Thymus Vulgaris Leaf Extract) is an extract of common thyme leaves. Contains thymol and carvacrol – phenolic compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action. Mechanism. Thymol disrupts microbial cell membranes, suppresses Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. Comparative tests with 5% benzoyl peroxide (Taborska 2017) showed comparable activity. Additionally suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6. Where applied. Anti-acne products (Mario Badescu, Pixi Beauty), oily-skin toners, scalp products. Final-product concentration 0.5-3%. In Spain – ingredient in Sesderma Acnesis, Babé Acne. Evidence base. RCT Tabassum 2014 in 60 moderate-acne patients: 5% thyme extract – 35% acne reduction over 5 weeks, comparable to 5% benzoyl peroxide with better tolerance. Safety. CIR confirmed safety at cosmetic concentrations. Patients allergic to Lamiaceae (rosemary, mint, basil) may show cross-reactions. Thyme essential oil (>5%) is a strong irritant; the extract is gentler. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Cosmetic-concentration extract is acceptable; thyme essential oil (oral, in pregnancy) is contraindicated.
