A plant extract. Safe.
Thyme extract (INCI: Thymus Vulgaris Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract) comes from the common thyme plant. It contains thymol and phenolic compounds, which give antioxidant properties and some ability to slow microbial growth. In a formula it can lend a soothing feel and support preservation. This is a functional supporting ingredient. Its antimicrobial and antioxidant action is real at the formula level, but as a skincare active its clinical backing is modest. It is not an acne treatment or a brightening route. Topically, at usual cosmetic concentrations, it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Good tolerance: low risk of irritation and allergy. Even so, with aromatic plant extracts it is worth watching whether very sensitive skin reacts.
