An antioxidant plant extract. Safe.
Thyme flower and leaf extract (INCI Thymus Vulgaris Flower/Leaf Extract) comes from the common aromatic plant. In cosmetics it works as a plant antioxidant and as support for blemish-prone skin, thanks to its phenolic compounds such as thymol. The antioxidant and clarifying side makes sense: thyme phenols help curb oxidation and have activity against microbes. As support for acne-prone skin it works; it is not an acne treatment in the clinical sense but a complementary component. Applied topically it is not systemically relevant, so in cosmetics it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue. Concentrated thyme essential oil is handled more carefully, but the extract in a formula does not create that level of exposure. Tolerability is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low at cosmetic concentrations, suitable for most skin types. There is no data on relevant comedogenicity.
