A chalcone from liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza inflata). Acts on multiple inflammation pathways: inhibits NF-κB and suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α). In clinical studies it shows effects in rosacea and sensitive skin, and inhibits Propionibacterium acnes growth. Key active in the Eucerin Anti-Redness and Eucerin Dermo-Pure lines.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Several clinical studies show erythema reduction in rosacea and sensitive skin, and reduction in papule counts in acne. Effects are modest but consistent. Complements mainstream approaches (metronidazole and ivermectin for rosacea, BPO and adapalene for acne) but does not replace them.
Licochalcone A is a retrochalcone isolated from the root of Uralic liquorice Glycyrrhiza inflata. One of the actives with the most convincing evidence base among plant anti-inflammatory ingredients. Mechanism. Suppresses NF-κB activation and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, prostaglandin E2 (Kolbe 2006). Inhibits 5-α-reductase in the sebaceous gland – sebum reduction in acne patients. Antibacterial effect in vitro against Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). Where applied. Eucerin Anti-Redness and Eucerin Dermo-Pure lines – licochalcone A as the key active (~0.1%). Also in Beiersdorf Aquaphor, Pharmaceris, Spanish ISDIN Acniben. Evidence base. An RCT in 62 patients with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (Weber 2006) showed 38% redness reduction over 8 weeks with 0.1% licochalcone A cream. A comparative acne study (Friedrich 2007) showed efficacy comparable to 5% benzoyl peroxide but without irritation. Safety. CIR confirmed safety at cosmetic concentrations. Does not photosensitize. Allergy is extremely rare (<0.1%). Suitable for the most sensitive skin. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. One of the actives allowed for gestational rosacea and perioral dermatitis (AAD 2024). Particularly suitable for. Erythematotelangiectatic and papulopustular rosacea, perioral dermatitis, mild-to-moderate acne, post-procedure recovery, sensitive skin.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Licochalcone A is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Licochalcone A suits: normal, dry, combination, oily, sensitive.
