Meadowfoam seed oil (Limnanthes alba) is a plant oil from the seeds of an annual herb native to North America. Its fatty acid profile is unique: 95% long-chain monounsaturated C20–C22 fatty acids (eicosenoic, docosenoic), rare in natural oils. Mechanism. Long monounsaturated chains provide high oxidative stability – the oil resists rancidity for years without preservatives. On skin it acts as a light non-occlusive emollient: softens, smooths, does not leave a heavy film. Boosts stability of other oils in the formula, so formulators add it to oils with short shelf life. Where applied. Natural creams and serums, lip balms, botanical cleansing oils. Brands include John Masters Organics, Pai Skincare, Weleda. In Spain – niche natural lines, rarely in mass cosmetics. Evidence base. No human RCTs on skin effects. Composition and stability data come from Isbell 1999 and USDA work. For moisturization with proven effect, choose glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides. Safety. CIR has not published a separate assessment yet. Allergenic potential is low; contact dermatitis cases in the literature are isolated. No pregnancy or lactation data, but as a food-grade oil with stable composition and no solvent residues, the risk is minimal. Suitable for dry and sensitive skin, for thin-skin zones (around eyes, neck).
