INCI: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder
Ground green tea leaves (matcha). High concentration of EGCG catechins – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory in vitro. On skin works milder than extract.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Antioxidant potential is well-studied in vitro. Topical RCTs on matcha powder are limited to EGCG studies.
Matcha Leaf Powder (Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder, Matcha) is dried and finely milled Japanese matcha tea leaves. Contains a high concentration of catechins, primarily epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG, 5–10%), along with caffeine, theanine, chlorophyll. Mechanism. EGCG is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants: neutralizes free radicals, suppresses matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-9), reduces inflammation by inhibiting NF-κB. Caffeine provides a vasoconstrictive and firming effect. Where applied. Antioxidant serums and creams, masks, eye-area products. Concentration 0.5–3%. In Spain – in niche and pharmacy cosmetics, less in mass-market lines. Evidence base. Chiu 2005 RCT (n=40) with topical 10% green tea showed reduced signs of photoaging over 8 weeks. The Hsu 2005 systematic review confirms photoprotective properties of green tea polyphenols. No standalone RCTs on pure matcha powder – evidence is extended from green tea. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of green tea extracts. Non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic. Tints skin greenish at over 2% (chlorophyll) – requires rinsing. Pregnancy and lactation – topically safe. Topical use does not lead to significant systemic caffeine absorption.
