4-Terpineol (INCI: 4-Terpineol) is an aromatic component of essential oils, found mainly in tea tree oil. In formulas it provides scent and a light soothing touch, and it sometimes accompanies actives aimed at oily, acne-prone skin. In role it is a sensory and supporting ingredient. There is interest in tea tree for acne-prone skin, but pinning that effect on isolated 4-terpineol goes too far: its realistic contribution is fragrance and a calming touch, not acne treatment on its own. Topically there is no meaningful systemic exposure, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Irritation potential is low, but as an essential-oil component it carries a medium allergy risk. Most people tolerate it; on skin sensitized to essential oils it can cause itching or redness.
