Terpineol is a terpene alcohol, a scent component of many essential oils (pine, tea tree, citrus). INCI: Terpineol. In a formula it gives a fresh floral-lilac aroma and sometimes acts as a weak preservative booster through mild antimicrobial activity. It is primarily a fragrance component, not a skincare active. It has no meaningful action on skin of its own. Allergenicity. Terpineol is among the potential fragrance contact allergens. On air oxidation its activity rises, and contact allergy is possible in sensitized people. Most do not react. Pregnancy safety. At cosmetic concentrations systemic absorption is low and there is no evidence of harm with topical use. Irritation potential is low.
