Saturated fatty acid with 16 carbons. One of the baseline components of the skin's lipid mantle (approximately 20% of stratum corneum fatty acids). In cosmetics it is used as an emulsifier component and emollient. Also found in palm-oil-based soaps. At excess concentration it can leave a heavy film feel.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Functional barrier lipid. Paired with other fatty acids and ceramides it restores the lipid mantle. Has no standalone active effect. Safety profile is favourable.
Palmitic Acid is a saturated fatty acid with 16 carbon atoms (C16:0). One of the main components of triglycerides in plant and animal fats. Makes up 20–25% of human sebum. In skin – an important component of stratum corneum intercellular lipids. Mechanism. A structural component of skin's lipid matrix. Replenishes lipid deficit in dry and atopic skin. With alkalis forms palmitates (soaps), used as surfactant. Where applied. Emollients, soaps, creams, foundations. Concentration 1–15%. Often combined with ceramides, cholesterol, and linoleic acid – the "gold standard" of barrier repair in CeraVe formulas. Evidence base. The Lin 2018 systematic review showed that palmitic acid combined with ceramides and cholesterol at the physiological 1:1:1 ratio is effective in atopic dermatitis. AAD 2024 recommends ceramide-lipid emollients with palmitic acid as first-line. Safety. Comedogenicity 2 of 5 – in acne patients in leave-on formulas may cause comedones. In rinse-off formulas the risk is minimal. Pregnancy and lactation – topically safe. Context. Most palmitic acid in cosmetics comes from palm oil – a major driver of deforestation in Southeast Asia. Ethical brands switch to RSPO-certified raw material or alternative sources (coconut, enzymatic synthesis).

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Palmitic Acid is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Palmitic Acid suits: normal, dry, combination. Use with caution in: oily.
Saturated fatty acid with 16 carbons.
On the Fulton scale 2/5 – low comedogenicity. For acne-prone skin, a rating of 3 or higher suggests choosing an alternative.
The INCI name is Palmitic Acid. It may also appear as: Hexadecanoic Acid, C16:0, Пальмитиновая кислота.
