Phosphonic Acid is a chelating agent. Its function in a formula is to capture metal ions present in water and raw materials, which otherwise speed up oxidation and darkening of the product. It works at very low levels and protects the stability and color of the formula. The verdict is clear. This is a functional formulation component, not a care active. It does not act on wrinkles, pigment or hydration: its role is to keep the product stable across its shelf life. Its direct effect on skin is nil, and that is as intended. For topical use in pregnancy and breastfeeding it poses no concern at the usual, very low cosmetic concentrations. No meaningful systemic absorption is expected, so it can be used in these stages. Tolerance is good. Low irritation and low allergy potential at use levels. Most people see no reactions.
