Sphingolipid and precursor of ceramides. Supports barrier function and regulates the skin microbiome through mild antimicrobial activity.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Small clinical studies show effects on atopic and acne-prone skin through barrier support. Works in microdoses of 0.05–0.2% in formulas.
Phytosphingosine is a plant-derived sphingolipid, a precursor of ceramides. Produced by Pichia ciferrii yeast fermentation. In skin, phytosphingosine is a natural component of ceramides 3, 6-II, 9, NP – key stratum corneum lipids. Where applied. Barrier-restoration creams and serums, products for atopic and dehydrated skin (0.1-1%). Common in post-procedure care and rosacea products. In Bioderma Atoderm, La Roche-Posay Lipikar, Avène Tolerance. Mechanism. Restores the stratum corneum ceramide profile by direct incorporation into the lipid structure. Has mild antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, Malassezia (Bibel 1995, Pavicic 2007) – regulates the skin microbiome without aggressive antisepsis. Lowers inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) in keratinocytes. Evidence base. Studies (Bouwstra 2003, Coderch 2003) showed barrier restoration in ceramide-deficient skin in atopic dermatitis models. Clinical observations in mild and moderate atopy – reduction in TEWL and SCORAD over 4-8 weeks of 0.2% phytosphingosine. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, non-irritating. Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable in any product, including breast and nipple care during lactation.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Phytosphingosine is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Phytosphingosine suits: oily, dry, sensitive, combination, normal.
