Phytosqualane (plant-origin squalane) is a plant analogue of squalane. Produced by hydrogenating squalene from olive oil, sugarcane (biotech) or amaranth. Molecule identical to animal-derived squalane (from shark liver) but without ethical concerns. Where applied. Serums, creams, cleansing oils, hair and body products (1-100%). Base emollient in The Ordinary, Biossance, Caudalie, Indeed Labs. In Spain – Sesderma, ISDIN. Mechanism. Mimics squalene – a natural component of sebum (10-12% of adult sebum). Restores the lipid barrier, reduces TEWL, gives light slip without greasiness. Safety. CIR confirmed squalane/phytosqualane safety. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic (Fulton 0). Very stable – does not oxidise (unlike the parent squalene), does not go rancid. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable in any product, including breast care during lactation.

Phytosqualane is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
