Wrinkle smoothing works through film formation and disappears after washing. Pullulan does not deliver long-term anti-aging effects.
Pullulan is a linear polysaccharide of maltotriose units linked by α-1,6 glycosidic bonds, produced by fermentation of starch by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. Biodegradable, vegan, hypoallergenic, tasteless, and odorless. In cosmetics, it acts as a film-forming agent at 0.5–3%, creating a thin elastic film on the skin that temporarily tightens the surface and smooths fine lines (instant lifting effect). Found in anti-aging serums, eye creams, masks, makeup primers, and peel-off masks. The effect lasts 6–10 hours, until washed off. As the film dries, it gently tightens the skin – a sensation many users interpret as the product 'working,' even though pullulan has no long-term effect on skin structure. Also used as a thickener and emulsion stabilizer, and in pharmaceuticals as a gelatin alternative for capsule coatings. Safe for all skin types, suitable in pregnancy and breastfeeding, non-comedogenic, and non-allergenic. No known contraindications or interactions with active ingredients.
