It forms a temporary plug at the outlet of sweat glands and reduces the amount of sweat reaching the surface. Functionally it delivers: the antiperspirant effect of aluminum salts is well documented. It is not a skincare active in the usual cosmetic sense, but an ingredient with a concrete, effective job within its category. Applied topically, aluminum salts in deodorants show no meaningful systemic relevance, so they can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Anyone who prefers to avoid them out of personal caution has aluminum-free alternatives. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy are low. On freshly shaved skin or microcuts it can sting a little, so apply to intact skin.
