Camellia Japonica Seed Oil (tsubaki oil) is a fatty plant oil from Camellia japonica seeds, a traditional Japanese hair and skin treatment. Geishas have used it for centuries for hair shine and facial care. Composition and mechanism. Up to 80% monounsaturated oleic acid, plus palmitic, stearic, linoleic acids, natural squalenes and vitamin E. Oleic acid integrates into stratum corneum lipids and reduces transepidermal water loss. Its molecular structure is close to human sebum, so the oil spreads well and leaves no heavy film. Where applied. Facial and hair oils and serums, lip balms, products for dry and aging skin. In Spain – a niche alternative to DHC Olive Oil, found in Sesderma Seskavel hair masks and Isdin mature-skin products. Evidence base. Direct RCTs on skin are limited. In vitro and skin-model studies (Jung 2007) confirmed antioxidant activity and reduced UV-induced inflammatory markers. On hair the oil traditionally adds shine and reduces breakage – confirmed by comparative studies against mineral oil. Safety. CIR in 2019 rated Camellia spp. oils safe in cosmetic use. Non-comedogenic for most skin types, although acne-prone skin should patch-test fatty oils. Allergic reactions are rare. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable for belly, breast and nail-cuticle care. Best suited to: dry, dehydrated and mature skin, damaged hair, cuticles. Oily and active-acne skin: use cautiously.
