Disodium stearoyl glutamate (INCI: Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate) is an emulsifier derived from an amino acid, glutamic acid, joined to a fatty acid. It binds the oil and water phases and gives the formula a creamy, soft texture. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. Its job is to emulsify and add body to the cream: it keeps the blend stable and improves the feel. It is a mild-type emulsifier, well regarded in formulation, but no treatment effect on the skin should be expected from it. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin. At usual concentrations it does not dry or clog pores. Its amino-acid origin fits well in formulas meant for delicate skin with a pleasant feel.
