It is used mainly in hair products: it binds to the charged fiber, smooths the surface, reduces frizz and eases detangling; in skin formulas it leaves a silky feel. This is a functional conditioning component, not a treatment active. It improves manageability and feel, with no proven corrective action on the skin. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy potential. It is a milder alternative to older cationic conditioners. No worrying comedogenic profile at use levels.
