One of the mildest surfactants. Well tolerated, non-irritating.
Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate is a mild amino-acid surfactant, the ester of glutamic acid (a non-essential amino acid natural to the body) and coconut fatty acids. One of the gentlest commercial surfactants for skin cleansing. Mechanism. Amino-acid surfactants work at neutral pH (5.5-6.5), close to healthy skin pH. They do not disrupt the lipid barrier, do not wash out intercellular ceramides. Produce a mild creamy foam, unlike the abundant but irritating foam of sulfate surfactants (SLS, SLES). Where applied. Face cleansing gels and foams for sensitive and dry skin, infant cleansers, atopic and rosacea scalp shampoos, intimate hygiene products (5-25%). In Spain in Bioderma Sensibio Foaming, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Gel, Mustela Cleansing. Safety. CIR confirmed glutamic-acid-based surfactant safety (Final Report 2017). Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, non-comedogenic. ECOCert/Cosmos approved in organic cosmetics. Suitable for sensitive, acne-prone, atopic skin, rosacea, dermatitis patients. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Natural origin (glutamic acid and coconut), no restrictions in any cleansing product, including for infants and intimate hygiene.
