Hectorite is a natural clay mineral of the smectite group. INCI: Hectorite. In a formula it works as a thickener, stabilizer, and absorbent: it raises viscosity, keeps pigments and oils suspended, absorbs excess sebum, and gives creams and masks a smooth structure. It is a functional rheology component, not a skincare active. In clay masks it helps absorb oil and dirt. Pregnancy safety. An inert mineral, it does not penetrate skin, is systemically negligible, and there is no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low, but clays dry the skin, so dry skin should choose gentle formulas.
