Hyacinth extract (Hyacinthus orientalis) is obtained from the flower petals, most often by water-glycol extraction. It is used in small concentrations (typically 0.01-0.5%) because the flower carries a strong scent. Composition. Essential oil with phenolic and terpene compounds, flavonoids, traces of anthocyanins. Almost no meaningful doses of strong antioxidants or humectants reach the extract. Where applied. Natural and niche perfumed cosmetics, floral toilet waters, relaxing masks, body lotions. In Spain it appears in small concentrations in niche brands (Carmen Navarro, Toskani). Evidence base. No clinical RCTs of topical hyacinth extract exist. Marketing sometimes ascribes a "soothing" effect to it – this is a transfer of aromatherapy ideas, not dermatology. Safety. CIR rated Hyacinthus orientalis flower extract safe at cosmetic concentrations (2017). Allergic reactions are rare but possible: petals contain hyacinthans and calcium-oxalate raphides; contact with bulb sap (not petal) is a known skin irritant in gardeners. Pregnancy and lactation – no data, but the risk at cosmetic amounts is considered low. Perfumed formulas with a large hyacinth load are best avoided on sensitive skin and rosacea.
