Star anise fruit extract (INCI Illicium Verum Fruit Extract) comes from the fruit of Illicium verum and contains aromatic essential oils, including anethole. In cosmetics it is usually included for a toning and aromatic effect, accompanying other formula components. On efficacy a sober view is right. Its role is more sensory and supporting than treating; the clinical database for a specific skin benefit is scarce. It makes sense to understand it as a complementary component rather than an active with proven results. In cosmetic topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Here an honest word on tolerance: irritation is low, but allergy risk is medium.
