Lemon fruit extract (INCI: Citrus Limon Fruit Extract) is a plant extract that supplies organic acids, mainly citric acid, plus small amounts of vitamin C. In formulas it mostly works as an aromatic ingredient and as light support for a more even tone. On efficacy, it pays to stay honest. It acts as a supporting component with a mild brightening profile, and the evidence base is modest. It does not replace well-studied brightening actives such as niacinamide or stabilized ascorbic acid. Its role is usually sensory and supplementary. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is good for most skin types, with a low irritation potential. Allergy risk is medium: people sensitized to citrus may react, though most do not. Because of the acids, it is wise to avoid strong sun right after products with a high citrus concentration.
