Essential omega-3 fatty acid. Restores skin barrier in EFA deficiency states, anti-inflammatory potential.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Essential fatty acid with RCT-confirmed barrier effect.
Linolenic Acid (ALA, alpha-linolenic acid) is an essential omega-3 fatty acid with three double bonds. In skin it acts as a structural component of cell membranes and a precursor of anti-inflammatory lipid mediators (resolvins, protectins). Mechanism. Integrates into keratinocyte phospholipids and stratum corneum intercellular lipids, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Through metabolism to eicosapentaenoic acid and resolvins it suppresses IL-1β and TNF-α in skin (Calder 2017). Where applied. Barrier-repair serums, atopic dermatitis creams, sensitive skin products. Natural sources: rosehip oil (32%), flaxseed oil (50–55%), chia oil (60%), kiwi seed oil (60%). In Spain in Sesderma, Martiderm Atopic, Avène Trixera lines. Evidence base. An RCT in atopic dermatitis (Bamford 2013) showed a 22% SCORAD reduction over 8 weeks with topical high-linolenic oil. No systematic review of topical use exists yet – the main evidence base covers oral intake. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. Oxidizes in air – formulas require antioxidants (tocopherol) and opaque packaging. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. A good option for gestational xerosis and pregnancy-related atopy instead of retinoids. Suitable for nipple cracks during breastfeeding (rosehip oil is in Bepanthen Sensiderm).

Linolenic Acid is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Linolenic Acid suits: normal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive.
