It is used mostly in gels and cleansing formulas, where it gives the product body and makes the texture denser and nicer to spread. This is a functional ingredient, not an active. It does not treat the skin; it adjusts the viscosity and feel of the gel. In that role it does its job well and adds a silky touch to surfactant bases. Used topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As a surfactant it is ultra-mild.
