Its function is to join water and oil and, in cleansers, to soften the action of the main surfactants so the formula is gentler on skin. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. It does not treat skin conditions; it gives the base structure, sensoriality, and softness. In gels and shampoos its value is exactly that: making cleansing less harsh. For topical use there is no relevant systemic risk. It can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential. As a mild co-surfactant it tends to reduce a formula's harshness rather than dry the skin. It is not noted as comedogenic.
