In a formula it brings water and oil phases together and helps cleanse skin gently, lifting oils and makeup without harshness. It is a functional component, not a skincare active: its job is texture, cleansing and emulsion stability, with no anti-aging or brightening benefit. It does its technical job well and appears often in cleansing oils and makeup-removing milks. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue. Tolerance is high. As a coconut-derived surfactant it sits among the gentlest: low irritation and allergy with mild harshness, so it respects sensitive skin. As with any cleanser, rinse well so no residue stays behind.
