Extract of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (INCI: Phaeodactylum Tricornutum Extract) comes from a marine microalga. In cosmetics it is presented as an ingredient with supporting photoprotective action and some brightening effect. A caveat is needed: the manufacturer links this extract to protection from UV radiation and an effect on dark spots, but independent human-skin data are scarce. It is a supporting ingredient with limited evidence, not a sunscreen filter or a proven brightener. It does not replace a sunscreen.
