Polypodium leucotomos root extract (INCI: Polypodium Leucotomos Root Extract) is a fern extract with antioxidant action. In a formula it helps defend skin against free radicals and photo-stress, without replacing sun protection. There is nuance on efficacy. Polypodium leucotomos has its strongest evidence taken orally in supportive photoprotection contexts; applied topically the effect is more modest and is best read as a complementary antioxidant. As an active it performs, but it adds no SPF: sunscreen is still needed. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high. Irritation and allergy potential are low, it does not clog pores and suits sensitive skin.
